Flight Training Self Fly Hire: FAQs

Cranfield & Gloucester

1. What limitations are there?

There really are very few limitations, the main one as always is the weather and unfortunately we cannot control that!

2. What requirements are there?

You need to have a valid PPL(H) and medical, be type rated with a specified number of hours on type and have flown on that type within the last 28 days. You will be required to sign our "Conditions of Aircraft Hire" form. You will also need to be a member of the flying school, but this is free and takes only moments to set up.

3. How often do I have to fly to remain current?

You must have flown on type within the last 28 days. If not, you will need to have a short check flight with an instructor.

4. Can I land away at private sites?

Of course! All you need is prior approval from one of the instructors. It may be necessary to carry out a 'recce' of the site, depending on its location. You will also require permission from the owner to land at the private site.

5. If I hire the aircraft, how long can I keep it for?

Within reason and depending on availability, as long as you like! Many of our clients take the aircraft for the whole day and even overnight. We do however have a minimum charge of 1.5 flight hours per day.

6. Would I incur any additional costs for taking an aircraft away and keeping it overnight?

No. But our prices only include landing fees at Cranfield or Gloucester. The only additional charges are landing fees at other aerodromes. We do ask that you store the aircraft safely and preferably hangared.

7. What kind of facilities would I have access to?

You have access to all our facilities including a spacious crew room, several planning rooms, internet access to the met office and notams, a large hangar (at Cranfield) displaying several aircraft types, highly qualified and friendly instructors and of course other self fly hirers and students, producing a very friendly, enjoyable and professional atmosphere. Both sites offer refreshments and unrivalled views of and access to the airfield.

8. If I have trained elsewhere and hold a valid PPL(H) can I hire an aircraft from Patriot?

Yes, of course! You will need to have a check flight with one of our instructors beforehand but this is straightforward and typically only a short flight.
